PATRIOTISM

pa.tri.ot n. One who loves, supports, and defends one's country

When I was eight my grandfather died.

Being a Catholic alter boy, I had been to many funerals, but never to one that I knew the person being buried. I remember standing outside in the rain as the priest said the final prayers and the family stood around in clothing as dark as the mood. The thing that really perplexed me about the funeral was the flag that was draped over the coffin and the stern men who arrived and fired guns into the air. That was certainly something I hadn?t seen at any funeral before.

A few hours afterward I was riding shotgun in my family?s van with my father while the rest of the family was at my grandmother?s. My father didn?t say much. He was an only child and his father had just died leaving him in charge of caring for an aging and defiant old woman and the affairs of the estate. Needless to say, his mind was elsewhere.

The tires rolled along the brick roads of my grandfather?s hometown as the windshield wipers played their song.

?Dad??

?Yes??

?Why was there a flag on pap?s box??

?He was a soldier a long time ago, James. Just after he got married and before I was born.?

?Died he fight the bad guys?? I asked in my G.I. Joe mentality.

?Yes he did,? my father said with a laugh at my childishness.

?Was he a hero??

?Yes he was,? my father replied biting his lip. ?He never liked to talk about it though.?

When I grew up and became a little more understanding about the world I asked more questions and did some research. My grandfather had been drafted into the US Navy during World War II. He served in the European theater and in Philippines where his ship was sunk and he and some of his surviving crew mates had to swim to safety. That?s about all I learned, although I do know that something terrible happened during his time off fighting because he came back an emotional wreck and sought the bottle until his dying days and refused to talk about the war to anyone.

While he was classified as an alcoholic, it was never the full blown type. He went into politics and served an elected position in his home town for twenty-some-odd years. He was always a good husband and raised my father to be as good a man as I hope to one day be.

My grandfather was a hard-line Democrat and served his country in a time of war and a time of peace. And despite the grief he felt over lost friends he never let his sorrow distract him from doing whatever he could for his family and his community.

My grandfather was the epitome of a patriot.

Since September 11th there has been a lot of hand wringing going on about patriotism, the meaning of it and what it takes to be a patriot. The hand wringing has been ugly and I find it disgusting. One wing of the American political system has developed an absolute obsession with the term. So obsessed, in fact, that one can only conclude that the focus is of the political nature and not of the literal.

That wing is the left wing.

When I sat in my delivery truck for the industrial supply company I worked for on that Tuesday morning listening to the radio with a burned down cigarette between my fingers I felt rage and pure anger along with shock and astonishment. Any lefty would tell me that I was immoral to be angry. That makes me even more angry. Now before anyone runs off and accuses me of being in need of anger management classes, let me just remind the intelligent elite of this country that anger is actually considered to be a human emotion classified as ?a strong feeling of displeasure or hostility.?

If someone came into your home and killed a member of your family there would be something wrong with you if you weren?t angry. There would seriously be some kind of wires loose or crossed in your brain if anger wasn?t an immediate response. And let me just remind our liberal betters that there is also a difference between anger and blind rage. When the towers fell I wasn?t walking down the street screaming, ?Kill everyone in the world because I hate them!? I wanted the terrorists dead. I want the ones who trained them, feed them, clothed them, and supported them dead. I still do, every last God damned one of ?em. But that is not blind rage; that is focused anger. My anger is not towards a race or religion; it is to the ideology that swears the destruction of all things that involve liberty and happiness of the people to pursue their lives without obstruction.

But getting back to 9/11 I have to say that the outpouring of patriotism afterward was very heartwarming. Some would say that the patriotism wasn?t true because it took a national tragedy to bring it about. My answer to this is what would it have said about us as a people if we were all stoic and unaffected on September 12, 2001? The swell of love for this country helped us all through the misery and shock and it helped all of us realize just how much we love this land that stretches from ocean to ocean and beyond. The support for the president and his policies that would end any such threat ever again exploded and we all felt as though we were one facing a problem that needed the attention of the bulldog. We got after them and we have been successful.

But we couldn?t remain one for very long. You see, the president during the attacks was a Republican and if a Republican gets extremely popular that means bad news for the Democrats. The unity had to end eventually, so why not before the next election?

The left split from unity and then blamed the right and worked like furies to obstruct any and everything that could be done to execute the new national policy to root out and destroy terrorism. During the days when a flag flew before every house, the Democrats took theirs down and started to dissent. Dissent of and in itself is a very healthy thing for a democratic republic like the United States. But a democratic republic is built upon the consent of the people and when dissenting takes place that is against what the public wants, things will get ugly. But was it the dissenters fault they were suddenly unpopular? Oh hell no! How could that be? That?s preposterous! It had to be the administration?s fault. In fact, the administration is actually questioning the patriotism of the dissenters!!

How absurd.

The left preaches moral clarity, but what they fail to realize is that we, the people of this country, got our moral clarity at 9:33am on September 11, 2001. They want to go back and pretend it is September 10 and all is fine and gay.

If that?s what they believe then, hey, more power to them. I?m not an ideological bigot and in America you are free to believe what you want and that?s what we are protecting here. But if your point of view isn?t popular, don?t blame others by finding a Texas scapegoat in the Oval Office. The president never questioned the patriotism of the left. His staff never questioned the patriotism of the left. In fact, I challenge anyone to prove otherwise.

Yet some how the pulpit speeches continue as the Democrats constantly pound their collective fists and swear to all that is holy (but not in the Christian sense) that they are indeed very, very patriotic.

Hey, pal, it?s great you like America and all, a lot of us do, but do you have any actual issues to talk about? You hate Bush and you want to give money out to poor illegal Muslim immigrants? No thank you, I?ll vote over here. Oh, so now I?m a racist bigot? Bush is squashing you?re right to free speech? We need tinfoil hats to protect ourselves from the evil Bush mind control lasers in space? Well I don?t like you. What? It?s all Bush?s fault that I don?t like you? Because of him you can?t speak freely and get through to me? I?m standing right here talking to you so how are you not able to reach me?

I?ll tell you what, why don?t you put down the Kool Aid, that might help.

It?s painfully obvious that I?m a conservative and I generally don?t get along well with liberals when it comes to political discourse. But that doesn?t mean I believe that patriotism is confined to one wing of the political scale. If you like to play pretend circus midget with your pet monkey while you throw handfuls of peanut butter at the wall but you also love and support America and are willing to die for it then you are a patriot. The idea of patriotism is so black and white that it?s painful some people on the left don?t get it.

I don?t think liberals are unpatriotic. I question their judgment, but not the love of our country. Any accusation you hear from the left about their patriotism being questioned is pure fabrication. They are working for votes, pure and simple.

Last month I went to see my grandfather?s grave. It was raining again like it was the day he was buried. I stood before the soaked stone and thanked him for all he?s done for me and America. My favorite patriot of all time was a Democrat and it?s a damn shame there aren?t more liberals like him around today.

Not today, really

So yesterday I'm driving along to work enjoying my pre-shift Camel Wide and listening to talk radio and having a gay old time.

About 1/8 mile from work this guy driving an '88 Mercury Grand Marquis land yacht with the radio blaring comes flying through a stop sign at about 40 miles an hour and totals my car.

I mean it. The car. Is. Gone.

Thanks to the fact that I had my seatbelt on and my window rolled down I escaped any serious injury, except for the cut above eye that bled profusely for the twenty minutes after the accident. Regardless, my body feels like total shit today. They say you shouldn't tighten up before an accident but it's simple human reaction. Besides, this guy came flying so fast I didn't even see him until my car was sliding up onto the curb, all four wheels style.

Every muscle in body is screaming for more meds.

To top it off, the jackass didn't even say one word to me. Not after the accident, not when people stopped to help, not while the cops where there, not when my car was being loaded onto a flatbed truck, and not even afterward when the cops was handing out the accident report. Not one damn word.

It was the worst birthday ever. EVER.

What do ya know?

Poll: Majority of Palestinians Back Suicide Bombing

RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) - Seventy-five percent of Palestinians support the suicide bombing at an Israeli restaurant two weeks ago in which 21 people, including four children, were killed, a Palestinian survey showed Sunday.

The "religion of peace" argument is forever out the window.

The power of Allah compels you!!

The survey by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research, which questioned 1,318 respondents in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, also showed that 85 percent of Palestinians support a "mutual cessation of violence by both sides."

What?

Did I read that last line right?

75% percent of Palestinians support suicide bombing but 85% want to stop fighting?

Does "cause and effect" mean anything to these people?

Listen closely: *ahem* STOP BLOWING UP INNOCENT PEOPLE AND THE IDF WON'T RESPOND IN DEFENSE!!!!

Thank you.

Really...

Black Democrats Denounce Black Female Candidate

The Congressional Black Caucus denounced White House judicial nominee Janice Rogers Brown of California on Friday, with one member saying she was "cut from the same cloth as Clarence Thomas" and should be kept off a federal appellate court.

"This Bush nominee has such an atrocious civil rights record she makes Clarence Thomas look like Thurgood Marshall," said Rep. Diane Watson, D-Calif.

But shouldn't she get extra brownie points for being black? Otherwise I think you're being racist. I mean, after all, if Rush Limbaugh is a racist for saying a black quarterback is overrated by the media then aren't you racist for saying that Mrs. Brown here is overrated by the Bush administration?

Oh wait, you're not racist because you?re black. Or is it because what Rush said isn't racist?

I'm so confused.

But Republican senators immediately defended Brown. "If critics don't like Justice Brown's decisions, they should change the law, rather than attack her for partisan political gain," said Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Thank you, Senator; you're exactly right.

Nominees are to be approved by their qualifications to do the job, not their political stance. But of course, the Demmies aren't aware of this as was apparent during the Miguel Estrada fiasco.

The black Democrats said Brown's conservative credentials make her unfit for the D.C. judgeship. Brown, who is black, is considered among the California high court's most conservative justices.

Imagine what would happen if a group of Republicans came out and said a black female judicial nominee wasn't qualified because she was too liberal. The sparks would fly and Jesse Jackson would be beating the war drum.

By the way, where is Mr. Jackson? Isn't he all for this more blacks in high level government thing? Oh, that's right; he's only into blacks who think like him.

Bush "hasn't fooled us," said Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, D-D.C. "She's cut from the same cloth as Clarence Thomas."

Just a guess, but I don't think he was trying to fool anyone. Unless I missed the speech were Bush stood up next to Mrs. Brown and said "Hey, this lady is the biggest progressive love bunny I have ever met!"

Bush: Misleading Americans to judicial nominations, story at eleven.

Thomas, who became the Supreme Court's second black justice after Thurgood Marshall retired, is one of that court's most conservative members and a longtime critic of civil rights legislation and affirmative action programs.

And we all know how the left treated Clarence Thomas. Let me see, what did they call him? "Lawn jockey." "House negro." "Uncle Tom fool."

"That does not mean that any of us would and will give a pass to an unqualified nominee simply because she is a minority candidate," said Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif.

Oh I see. So we can discuss ending this affirmative action thingy then?

Didn't think so.

And now, A message from Osama

Osama bin Laden has message for Americans.

This is from the tape that aired on Al Jeezra today:

"I tell the American people we will continue fighting you and we will continue martyrdom operations inside and outside the United States until you stop your injustice, and you end your foolishness..."

When will this bastard learn? It's like it's not getting through his thick. Fucking. Skull.

Does he think that just because some unwashed fucking psycho hiding in a cave shitting behind a different rock every few hours says he's going to hurt us that we're just going to throw up our hands and say, "Ya know what? You're right! We quit! It's all yours baby! Please, rule us as you will!"

We. Are. Americans.

We don't quit.

We don't stop.

Sam Houston once stood before the Texas legislature on the eve of the Civil War and I always believed he summed up the American attitude very nicely:

They are not a fiery, impulsive people as you are, for they live in colder climates. But when they begin to move in a given direction...they move with the steady momentum and perseverance of a mighty avalanche..."

Osama says he's not going to stop until we fall on our backs and lie prone on the ground. Well let me tell you something, bud; WE are not going to stop until every last one of you motherfuckers are DEAD. You have eluded us for now, but we will never stop looking for you and eventually you will slip up and when that happens Delta Force will be kicking down your door and I hope, I hope, you just try and resist arrest, motherfucker.

Serenity (ya know, she lives in Texas now so should we start calling her "Ser-nitty" so she fits in better?), has a post up that takes me back to the days of using an employee lounge, taking part in radio call-in games, debating the best diet food to bring to work, and flirting with the UPS and/or FedEx guy.*

Of course I'm talking about working in a cubicle office.

Truth be told, I never actually worked in one. But when I drove truck for an industrial supply company I used to get a kick out of the entirely different bread of people that lived up in the front office.

*I never did any of this shit, but this is all I heard about when I went up front for the free coffee.

I apologize to anyone who swung by here yesterday for my Cubs report. From now on all of my Cubs stuff will be at Wrigley Bums. It's just a blogsnot site right now, I but I've gotten in touch with Cox and Forkum to see if they'd do a banner for me when I move it over to Movable Type and that conversation seems to be going well.

Anyways, this might be all I post today. I dunno. I will have plenty up tomorrow though.

Another moron

Someone just told me this at a forum:

The only solution to the problem facing Israel is to bestow equal rights unto each and every one of its sons and daughters, REGARDLESS of the colour of their skin or the name of the god they choose to worship. When Israel stops treating innocent civilians born into what could essentially be termed a kind of indentured servitude like slaves, the prisoners' desire to kill their captors will subside, if not disappear completely.

The biggest problem with Israel's official party line (and there IS only one...) is that it insists that a few dozen bad apples have spoiled a WHOLE BUNCH. We've ended up with a situation whereby Israel has ultimate authourity over every Palestinian alive. Shades of Hitler's Final Solution.

I'm speechless....completely and utterly speechless.

I'll be enraged in about five minutes when I pick my jaw up of the floor.

That fucking kid....

There we were: 5 outs away from the World Series. Leading 3-0 in the top of the eighth with one out.

Marlins hit a pop fly midway down the left field line. Cubs left fielder Moises Alou runs down the ball and jumps to catch the ball as it falls before the first row of seats.

And then, then, this fucking kid reaches up and grabs for the ball, knocking it away from Alou.

There after the Marlins staged an 8 run rally to win the game. Had Moises caught that ball, that batter would have been out and the rally wouldn't have happened.

Of course, Alex Gonzalez also managed to bobbled a routine double-play ball which would have ended the inning a few moments later that also would have kept the Cubs in the lead.

It was a great time until the eighth.

And no, this isn't going to be 3-1 lead and then lose three straight, either.

Kerry Wood will pitch tomorrow and we will go to the World Series.

In the meantime, that kid better watch his back.

Spins Away!

Well, like I said in my last post, I went on over to the libby posting board and had me some fun.

In a post titled "What the hell is wrong with this guy," I wrote:

Kevin McCullough: "...if you had the chance to play the biographical story of a historical figure you respected most over your lifetime, who would it be?" Ed Asner: "I think Joe Stalin was a guy that was hugely misunderstood," said Asner. "And to this day, I don't think I have ever seen an adequate job done of telling the story of Joe Stalin, so I guess my answer would have to be Joe Stalin."

Never ceases to amaze me. Maybe people don't understand, and I mean truly understand, Stalin because they're too busy looking at the graves of the hundreds of millions of people he killed.

And now for the replies (put your drink down first).

Stalin's an interesting political figure, no two ways about it, and I think it's unfortunate that most American film depictions of him have chosen to reduce him to a cartoon of a man. I think he best personifies the old adage about the road to hell being paved with nothing but the best intentions. *shrugs* Typical knee-jerk response to Asner's comments from the right, of course, which should surprise no one.

No, cocksucker, he isn't JUST misunderstood... But the consensus seems to be that Stalin, as well as many other historical figures, are often dumbed-down and portrayed in one-dimensional terms on the big screen.

He firmly believed, as all leaders do, that he was doing the right by his country. If Asner finds that worthy of respect, so be it. Jesus, it's not like he fucking came out and said he was a Neo-Nazi.

Look at the death toll, I think Stalinism was FAR worse than Nazism.

Well, the best way to prevent future mistakes is to learn from the past, I think it should be pretty obvious that the only reasonable way to deal with historical figures like Hitler and Stalin is an accurate and unbiased portrayal and analysis (insofar as that's possible, of course) of their lives. Simply condemning them as monsters isn't going to help anyone. We have to think of them as human beings and try to understand what made them tick and what made it possible to them to get where they eventually ended up - to prevent it from happening again.

Learn from past mistakes?? Maybe you can tell me why you're such a big supporter of socialism when it's been proven by history time and again to be a total and utter failure?

To keep the discussion going so I can come across even more bastions of stupidty, I wrote this in reply:

Imagine George W Bush had the CIA arrest an American citizen because someone told Bush that this particular citizen said something like "I don't like Bush or his policies." Then Bush asked the person wether he said this or not. Regardless of the answer, Bush has the person executed, followed by the person's entire family. After all, the State's better off without him.

How do you feel about that?

Now times it by about 20 million (a low ball estimate).

Golly gee, Stalin's just misunderstood.

And our left wing moral superior wrote:

I'm not really that in touch with my inner child, so I don't know how I feel about this entirely hypothetical scenario.

Nice dodge.

The spin was on, and you just saw the left's true colors here.

This should be fun.

Hey, all!

I'm heading over to a lib posting board that is festering in pure social ideology to post Ed Asner's recent comment:

Kevin McCullough: "...if you had the chance to play the biographical story of a historical figure you respected most over your lifetime, who would it be?"

Ed Asner: "I think Joe Stalin was a guy that was hugely misunderstood," said Asner. "And to this day, I don't think I have ever seen an adequate job done of telling the story of Joe Stalin, so I guess my answer would have to be Joe Stalin."

I'll post the article as a "what the hell is wrong with this guy?" tone.

I can't wait to see the spin.

I'll post the replies here tomorrow.

Goring Gore-TV

Cable Network Will Aim at 'Younger, Hipper' Audience

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- Former vice president Al Gore and a group of investors have plans to launch an all-news channel, but it won't be a liberal alternative to Fox News. Instead, it will be aimed at the under-25 crowd.

Oh God. This is gonna stink.

"Liberal TV is dead on arrival," said an insider advising Mr. Gore and his team. "You just can't do it."

Maybe because people aren't that stupid. A 24 hour news channel that is anti-common sense would go over like a fart in church.

The proposed news network will be positioned as "a professional news operation reaching an aware, younger, hipper audience," the adviser said, characterizing it as a combination of CNN and MTV. "The station will try to reach a younger market"...In order to attract the right kind of audience, Mr. Cohen said the network would "have to have some truly unique personalities, a unique skew on the news, lifestyle stuff

Okay, first of all, no matter what these yahoos say, this station is going to be soaking wet with runny liberal stinky-poo.

Can you imagine a channel going after young libs? Featuring such shows as "Bong Weekly with Howard Schwarz", "Pucking Blood Review with Moonflower", "Hate Report with Ted Kennedy", and my the prime time slot of "Raping your Jewish Intern with Bill Clinton."

Some observers feel that despite the change in tack, a network led by Mr. Gore will not be able to erect a firewall thick enough to insulate it from his Democratic Party affiliation.

So it will be just like, oh say, NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, NYT, LA Times, Washington Post, and BBC for the British?

"If there is any transparency to Gore, then it will be identified as a partisan operation, which will alienate advertisers," said the sales executive.

It already is. Trust me.

"The problem with being associated as liberal is that they wouldn't be going in a direction that advertisers are really interested in,"

Or viewers for that matter. Unless, of course, your solely going for the rank and file of Berkley U.

Truth be told, I can't wait for this thing to come on the air just so I can actually see what a cluster-fuck of douche bagism looks like. It is on my list of things to do before I die, you know.

I'll be damned

Man oh man.

Josh Beckett of the Florida Marlins just pitched one hell of a game. I hate to say it since he shut down my Cubbies, but watching this guy pitch was just phenomenal. He threw the whole game only giving up two hits and struck out eleven.

Looks like we're going back to Wrigley for game 6.

I guess it will be kinda beutiful to win the pennant at home, eh?

UPDATE: At least the NY/Bos game got postponed until tomorrow, which will move the whole series back a game. So if the Cubs win Tuesday, they'll still have a nice break before the WS.

Alive and on top again

I haven't been blogging on the Cubs lately, which is a shame since I should've been with everything going on. But anyway, for those of you who DO come here and enjoy the Cubs stuff there's going to be a Cubs blog being run by myself and my best friend starting up around spring training time next year.

We've been toying with the idea of doing that since about mid-season and never got around to getting it going. That's too bad since running such a blog would've been quite a bit of fun through this post-season.

But oh well.

Anyways, did you see the game last night? What an awesome clinic, eh?

The press had been playing up Marlins rookie pitcher Dontrell Willis for the past few weeks. The Marlins got Willis from the Chicago's Iowa Cubs farm club in the off-season along with another AAA player for pitcher Matt Clement, who pitched for the Cubs last night.

Willis, Marlins young stud extraordinary, immediately loaded the bases on walks in the top of the first when Cubs third baseman Aramis Ramirez stepped up to the plate. On a 2-2 pitch Ramirez made a good cut and set the ball flying into the stands for a grand slam. It was 4-0 Chicago, and they never looked back.

Willis came out with one out in third after giving up six runs.

Clement, on the other hand, did his job with true grit, pitching 7.2 innings and only giving up three runs. Marlins, you can keep Willis, we like Clement.

Ramirez hit another home run in the seventh after both Moses Alou and Alex Gonzalez hit in RBIs as the Cubs won by a score of 8-3.

Tonight is game 5 of the best of seven National League Championship Series. The Cubs have a 3-1 lead and can win the National League Pennant tonight with a win. It will be the first pennant for the Cubs since 1908.

The duel tonight will be between Cub Carlos Zambrano and Marlin Josh Beckett tonight at Pro Player stadium in Miami. As much as I would like for the Cubs to win the pennant at Wrigley, I think they have a much better shot at winning the World Series of they win tonight. First off, it would give the Cubs a well needed break as Boston and the Yanks continue to battle it out. But more importantly, if the Cubs win tonight, then they can start the World Series with the top of their pitching rotation.

If the World Series goes seven games, the Cubs pitching per game would look like this:

Game one: Wood
Game two: Prior
Game three: Clement
Game four: Zambrano
Game five: Wood
Game six: Prior
Game seven: Zambrano

With Kerry Wood and Mark Prior being the two hottest pitchers in baseball right now I absolutely love the idea of both pitching twice in the WS. If that is our pitching rotation for the series of all series, then I really, really like our chances.

Guess we'll find out.

If Kobe puts on a US military uniform, drags his lanky over-paid ass (oh shit, I just said a black athlete is over-rated, I must be racist!) through boot and go fight for the freedom of others then maybe I'll give two shits. Until then, nadda.

The same thing goes for Scott Peterson, Elizabeth Smart, and whoever else I've forgotten about who was big in the news five minutes before I posted this. The shit. Doesn't. Matter.

Hope you folks don't mind. I'm feeling a little bloodthirsty today.

Do you ever get the feeling like someone you know well just suddenly quits giving a fuck about you?

Do you ever feel like you've worked your fucking hands to the bone day in and day out over the span of several years just to make someone happy and give them what they want and then one day something doesn't go their way and everything you've done goes out the window in a split second?

Have you ever endured vats of pure bullshit from someone because you love them? Have you ever one day suddenly been hit by this fact like a 2x4 to the forehead and found yourself absolutely dumbfounded?

Has there ever been a time when you have so much truth you want to speak built up inside you and it's ready to blow like a pressure boiler but you don't because you know it'll only make things worse? Have you ever known someone you can't be honest with because the fight just isn't worth it?

I hate to wax sentimental like this; I know it's not what people come here for. But hey, it's my fucking blog and I'm havin' a bad fuckin' day.

God dammit.

Rush: No Spin

Whether you like Rush or not, his announcement today was straight forward and without frills or spin.

Rush is addicted to pain meds. Such has been suspected ever since Drudge broke the story about him supposedly buying pain meds on the black market and the ensuing police investigation.

Well, today Rush addressed the claims on his show:

"You know I have always tried to be honest with you and open about my life. So I need to tell you today that part of what you have heard and read is correct. I am addicted to prescription pain medication.

"I first started taking prescription painkillers some years ago when my doctor prescribed them to treat post surgical pain following spinal surgery. Unfortunately, the surgery was unsuccessful and I continued to have severe pain in my lower back and also in my neck due to herniated discs. I am still experiencing that pain. Rather than opt for additional surgery for these conditions, I chose to treat the pain with prescribed medication. This medication turned out to be highly addictive.

"Over the past several years I have tried to break my dependence on pain pills and, in fact, twice checked myself into medical facilities in an attempt to do so. I have recently agreed with my physician about the next steps.

"Immediately following this broadcast, I am checking myself into a treatment center for the next 30 days to once and for all break the hold this highly addictive medication has on me. The show will continue during this time, of course, with an array of guest hosts you have come to know and respect.

"I am not making any excuses. You know, over the years athletes and celebrities have emerged from treatment centers to great fanfare and praise for conquering great demons. They are said to be great role models and examples for others. Well, I am no role model. I refuse to let anyone think I am doing something great here, when there are people you never hear about, who face long odds and never resort to such escapes. They are the role models. I am no victim and do not portray myself as such. I take full responsibility for my problem.

"At the present time, the authorities are conducting an investigation, and I have been asked to limit my public comments until this investigation is complete. So I will only say that the stories you have read and heard contain inaccuracies and distortions, which I will clear up when I am free to speak about them.

"I deeply appreciate all your support over this last tumultuous week. It has sustained me. I ask now for your prayers. I look forward to resuming our excursion into broadcast excellence together."

I think he said it well and retained my respect for him. He didn't look for a scapegoat, he didn't ask for praise for facing his problem, and he didn't make any excuses for it either.

While I'm not going to defend him I will admit that I at least understand why he's addicted to pain meds. The guy had back surgery and has a slipped disc in his neck.

I threw my back out really bad my junior year in high school during a wrestling match. Let me tell you, as anyone who?s had back problems before can attest to, back injuries are pure hell. Once you're in the position it is absolutely impossible to find a position without pain. You can't sit, you can't stand, you can't lay, it's just the worst feeling in the world.

I distinctly remember lying on the couch at home, rotating a heating pad and an ice pack, downing aspirin and the prescribed stuff I had as much as possible. At age seventeen I wanted whiskey so bad just to make the pain go away.

There you are, a helpless piece of flesh grounded to a bed or a couch with nothing to do except think about the immense pain you're in.

Truth to tell: It sucks.

I'm glad Rush admitted he has a problem (and being addicted to pain meds is a real problem), and I'm glad he's getting help.

Naturally there will be critics of his that will remark with smug arrogance how happy they are at this recent development.

Fuck 'em.

At least Rush came out with honesty and dignity in light of his flaws and I respect that.

Conversation with an Idiotarian

So I've been having this little e-mail exchange with a troll I met over at Jawsblog.

Here is what he wrote in Jaws' comments section over several posts.

"Who cares what you think? What a stupid, ugly site you fucking nazi [sic]."

"Denial is the only thing that keeps wingnuts like you from flipping
out and shooting up your workplace. Give it up, loser. America doesn't
need lying hatemongers like you."

"Hey, dipshit, go wack[sic] off to your Arnold posters."

"You're a racist asshole. Keeping blogging into the void. No one cares
what you think. O, just give it up."

After I was done proving that this mister "Lou" was a complete moron (not that that isn't already blatantly obvious) I decided to e-mail him and find out what his malfunction was.

So I sent him the comments he made above with this question:

May I ask A. where you have proof that Jaws is a racist, and B. where do you get off calling Jaws a "hatemonger" when you're the one throwing this kinda of rhetoric around?

Just a question.

James

To which Lou wrote back:

Just trying to stay in the spirit of Misha's site. Take it for what it's worth. Compassionately yours, Lou

Then I wrote:

Hmmmmm

That's funny. I never remember Misha going around to other people's
site and calling people names at random. Besides, if you're mad at
Mish, why take it out on Jaws?

Just a question from one civilized person to another.

Best,
James

And then today I got this:

You're all the same vile spawn of Satan.....

So I sent him back an e-mail thanking him for his open-mindedness.

If this isn't a crystal clear example of the absurdity of the left when it comes to being open-minded to alternate points of view. You can find people on the left who will defend Stalin to the ends of time and yet will absolutely refuse to even listen to the advantages of making a tax cut.

Of course he also called Jaws a racist (never mind that Jaws his Hispanic), showing the left's patent use of stereotypes when they, themselves, claim to be the champions of non-discrimination.

Lou, you've made my day, pal. Thanks for the very insightful conversation.

Iran fucking up Iraq

Can we oust the Mullah's yet?

Tehran's Mullahs Planting Spies in Iraq

Iran has dispatched hundreds of agents posing as pilgrims and traders to Iraq to foment unrest in the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala, and the lawless frontier areas.

Tehran's hard-line regime has also allowed extremist fighters from Ansar al-Islam, a terror faction with close links to al Qaeda, to cross back into Iraq from its territory to join the anti-American resistance.

Pile this up on top of Iran's non-compliance with the IAEA in building possible nuclear weapons and we've got on country just begging to be taken out back.

The Pentagon believes that Iran is building a bridgehead of activists inside Iraq, ready to destabilize the country if that serves its future interests.

"They are provoking sectarian divisions, inciting people against the Americans and trying to foment conflict and anarchy," said Abdulaziz al-Kubaisi, a former Iraqi major who was jailed by Saddam Hussein and is now a senior official in the Iraqi National Congress.

"The last thing that certain elements in the regime want is to see a stable democratic and pluralistic Iraq next door, so they are trying to export trouble here," said a leading official in another Iraqi party.

So here we have a country, Iraq, that is working hard to get on its feet after decades of oppression and rule by fear and the ruling class of its neighbor, Iran, is fueling Islamic radicalism to upset the rebuilding efforts.

What's remarkable is that the everyday people of Iran want freedom from their rulers and what the very same peace and democracy that we are now giving to the people of Iraq. The Iraqi people want to be free, the Iranian people want to be free, and the thing standing in the way of both is the small ruling class of Iran.

I know I've said this before, but can you imagine what a different place the world would be if both Iraq and Iran were free and democratically self-governed?

There would be no more hate. No more violence. No more senseless slaughter. The Arab world could move along into the modern world with all its wealth and comforts.

There is one lynchpin keeping this from happening: The clergy of Iran.

To the people of Iran, we support you.

For Once...

...maybe we should follow the lead of our ally.

Sharon Threatens to Hit Israel's Enemies Anyplace

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Buoyed by U.S. backing for Israel's right to defend itself, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said Tuesday the Jewish state was ready to hit its enemies anywhere following an air raid deep inside Syria.

Look. I think Bush is a great president. He handled 9/11, Afghanistan, and Iraq very well. But we must remember that stomping out terrorism is more than just Al Quaeda, the Taliban and their supporters. Stomping out global terrorism means exactly that and I'm pretty sure Bush once declared that was our goal.

I hope this doesn't mean we don't consider Islamic Jihad and Hamas to be terrorist groups.

Speaking at a memorial service marking the anniversary of the 1973 Middle East war, Sharon took a tough line but made no specific threats after Sunday's strike on what Israel said was a training camp for Palestinian militants.

Sharon has always been a tough SOB. They'd get some work done if the US wasn't always telling Israel to restrain herself.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, breaking his silence on the attack near Damascus, accused Israel of trying to drag Syria and the rest of the Middle East into a wider conflict. Syria said Israeli warplanes hit a civilian site.

Syria dragged itself into the conflict by harboring terrorists inside its own borders.

It was Israel's deepest air raid in Syria in three decades. It followed a Palestinian suicide bombing that killed 19 people in a restaurant in the Israeli port city of Haifa a day earlier.

There. You see it? That grease stain in the sand is one less squad of suicide bombers Israel has to worry about.

President Bush insisted Monday that Israel should not feel constrained in defending itself but said he told Sharon: "It's very important that any action Israel take(s) should avoid escalation and creating higher tensions."

Isn't that what the left told him about Iraq and Afghanistan?

Sharon's first public comments since Sunday's strike also followed a flare-up of violence on Israel's border with Lebanon, where Syria is the main powerbroker.

"Israel will not be deterred from defending its citizens and will hit its enemies any place and in any way," Sharon said in a speech broadcast live from a military cemetery in Jerusalem.

Sounds kinda like Bush on September 12, huh? Although I have a feeling Sharon means what he said and won't back down after a few victories.

"At the same time, we will not miss any opening and opportunity to reach an agreement with our neighbors and peace."

All Israel wants is to live in peace. They are under constant threat of radical Islamists who take innocent lives without remorse. Israel is the people who act morally and justly in the hopes of defending herself and hopefully reaching a stage of peace with their murderous neighbors.

And Howard Dean says we shouldn't take sides.

Fucker.

Israel accuses Syria of giving safe haven to Palestinian militants spearheading a 3-year-old uprising for independence.

Political analysts saw the Israeli air raid as a warning shot to Syria, whose military is no match for Israel's, and said it was unlikely to escalate into a full-blown conflict.

But they expected heightened tensions between the two countries and sporadic clashes with Lebanese Hizbollah guerrillas backed by Syria and Iran.

Personally, I think Bush should be calling Sharon and asking if he needs any help.

In an interview with the daily al-Hayat, Assad said Syria would not yield to U.S. demands to expel Palestinian organizations on Washington's list of terrorist groups.

What ever happened to "with us or against us"?

"(The raid) is an attempt by the Israeli government to extract itself from its big crisis by trying to terrorize Syria and drag it and the region into other wars," he said.

Why would Israel make it a goal to drag other countries into a war against itself? Come on, use your head.

Syria called an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council Sunday, but Washington, which has a veto, said it would not support a resolution that condemned the Israeli raid without mentioning the Haifa suicide attack.

Ya damn right.

Palestinian President Yasser Arafat, facing fresh Israeli threats to "remove" him, Tuesday swore in an emergency eight-member Cabinet led by Prime Minister Ahmed Qurie, who has close ties to Arafat.

Oh, neat! He found some friends to be buried under the rubble of his compound with. That's so sweat.

Sharon adviser Raanan Gissin said Israel would judge the new Cabinet by its actions, but added: "In all likelihood, if it is established by Arafat, it will not fight terror."

Araft fighting terror? I'd guess he's a man of his word....not!

The Palestinians are required to rein in militants under a stalled U.S.-backed peace "road map," but Qurie has ruled out a crackdown for fear of starting a civil war. The Palestinian resistance groups, Hamas and Islamic Jihad, cautioned in a Beirut statement against the Palestinian Authority using the new Cabinet to "take oppressive measures."

Hey, Palestine, we understand that you're afraid to get rid of those terrorist groups, and that's fine, so why don't you let us in and we'll do it for you? We'll even take the blame.

Under terms of the road map, Israel at this stage is supposed to begin easing the hardships of Palestinians and stop building settlements.

This I understand.

Israeli military sources said "terror groups" in southern Lebanon fired missiles and rockets early Tuesday that landed near an army base and a communal farm in northern Israel.

A missile also hit a house in southern Lebanon, killing a boy. Security sources in Beirut said it was probably fired at Israel from inside Lebanon but fell short.

But of course, this is all just a ruse to get Syria mad at Israel, right?

Israel's army said a soldier was shot dead at the border on Monday, and military sources blamed his death on Hizbollah, which denied any involvement.

Maj. Gen. Benny Ganz, commander of Israel's northern corps, pointed the finger at Syria, Iran and Lebanon, saying: "If these three states are not careful, the situation is likely to deteriorate."

Or get a lot better in the long run, from where I'm standing.

Gropnesia

This is the official term for a new form of mental disorder uncovered by California psychologists.

The very rare disease seems to inflict women with a strange form of amnesia about certain encounters with the Hollywood star turned politician Arnold Schwarzenegger that may or may not have happened.

Scientists say that any woman can have a quasi-sexual encounter with Schwarzenegger (whether fabricated or not) and suddenly forget about the encounter. The disease can go undiagnosed for years, even decades, because tell tale symptoms do not arise until one week before the vote on an election in which Arnold is a candidate. That is when, for some unfounded reason, the amnesia clears and all the pain and hurt (whether fabricated or not) resurfaces and the women feels the need to speak out to alleviate the pressure on the soul (or for laundered money from the DNC).

A cure has not yet been found although specialists just pray for the election to be over quickly in the hopes that the recent outbreak will subside.

Take it from Sir Elton

Once again somebody from over there thinks they are important for some reason and spouts off about world opinion of America and expects us to care.

To be frank, I still don't.

Sir Elton absolutely despises Dennis Miller.

The superstar pop music icon...attacked Miller from his piano perch at the end of Saturday night's "Grand Slam for Children" benefit hosted by Agassi at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

"Americans are always asking why the rest of the world hates them," John said after singing his first song, "Tiny Dancer." "Well, the reason is Dennis Miller."

That's it? You hate and despise us as a nation of free people because of Dennis Miller? You opposed the liberation of fifty million people from a torturous regime because of one stand-up comic?

And you say we're shallow.

"You've all gone mental if you liked that," John said, before looking at the floor and shaking his head in disgust.

So much for freedom of expression from the "open minded" left.

Earlier in the show Miller delivered about 20 minutes of his usual act -- biting, sarcastic political humor with a very strong right-of-center slant.

Miller's remarks include bits about not caring about blowing the Baghdad Museum to bits, and his advocating killing caribou and raping Alaska for oil so there would be a lessened dependency on foreign outlets.

Sounds pretty good to me. I guess that makes me "mental" according to this man.

I'm highly offended (stop laughing).

News of the Day

I just finished watching the movie Armageddon. Do you remember when the president authorized the surface detonation of the nuke on the asteroid (which would've winded up killing every single person on the planet) and the NASA guys had to fight to keep it from happening and in the end the good guys won?

I wonder what that president's approval ratings looked like after that little tidbit hit Drudge.

Anyway, on to the news of the day.

US image drops among Muslims

That's funny. They should see what the US thinks of Muslims. I am by no means a racist, but we've quite had enough of Allah these past few years.

L.A. Times Faces Anger for Schwarzenegger Coverage

You've got to be kidding me! You mean all those "biased" charges against the media are true and people are actually pissed about it. Get out of town!

Egypt says Arafat removal would be "terrorist act"

This statement is sorta like the Mexican government lecturing us on "border sovereignty."

Feminists Laud Moseley Braun: Supporters say female candidate is important to crowded presidential race

Looks like I'll owe my buddy ten buck because it looks like she will get more than three votes.

That's all for now.

Carry on.

EXCLUSIVE:::Putin Revealed!!

The mud slinging against Arnold Schwarzenegger since he joined the race to unseat Gray Davis has increased about as much as our wonderful progressive, achievement punishing tax scheme.

But we, the agents of the VRWC, Inc, have finally cracked open the case on who is behind the anti-Arnold camp.

He is, without a doubt, Russian President Vladmir Putin.

Putin is well known among the intelligence circuits to play ?dress up? and playfully roam the world in an attempt to take on other personalities.

For example, here is a picture of Vladmir Putin pretending to be the Mona Lisa.

Here is a photo of Putin breaking the hearts of little children by being the ?Superior Russian (although starved)? Santa Clause.

This photo was taken in Jersey were Putin tried to make his way into a Rod Stewart look-a-like contest .

Crossing into other media, Putin even recently tried to make his way as a character on the Simpson?s.

But the real kicker is the one just snapped yesterday of Putin dressed to play the part of a woman who was supposedly groped by Arnold.

Will this madness ever end?

CUBS WIN!!

Gettin' the job done. That's what my beloved Cubbies did tonight in Atlanta by defeating the Atlanta Braves 5-1 to win game 5 of the Natioanl League Division Series.

Kerry Wood (the name of my next born) threw another gem and shut down the highest rated offense in Major League Baseball.

Incredible!

Now we've got home field advantage against the Florida Marlins who the Cubs have beaten 4 out of 6 times this season.

Bring it on.

New to the VRWC, INC Blog Roster

Today we've got two new additions to my Blog Roster.

First is Chris (CD) of Syracuse University who has a new blog known as Semi-Intelligent Thoughts (SIT). Chris, like me, knows what it's like to deal with asshatted liberal professors. And hey, his favorite movie is Gettysburg. I can't argue with that.

Next is Dr. David Yeagley, a Comanche Indian, who runs a great blog known as Bad Eagle. I was just introduced to this guy and I think he's absolutely brilliant (not to mention the fact that he has a bachelor's degree, two master's degrees, a doctoral degree, and is a special student at the doctoral at Harvard).

Read 'em both. They're well worth it.

Did the Bears (as in the Chicago Bears) just beat the defending AFC champs the Oakland Raiders?

Did I just witness an anomaly in the very fabric of reality?

Did Kordell "The Fruit" Stewart just beat Annika's team?

My mind is in a daze. What the fuck just happened?

Do or Die in Game 5

Last night the Chicago Cubs hopped to end the best of five series against the Atlanta Braves at Wrigley. Unfortunately, things did not go our way.

What happened last night shows what the key is going to be between a Cubs victory and a Cubs loss this post season. The Cubs have great starting pitchers, but their bull pen is just slightly above mediocre. If the starting pitcher has a great game, the Cubs will win. If the starter begins to sour early and the bull pen has to come in premature, the Cubs don't stand a very good chance.

Take the Cubs two victories against the Braves and compare it to the two losses. In both the wins Mark Prior and Kerry Wood started. In Game one Wood pitched over seven innings only giving up only two hits, two runs and struck out 11. In game three Mark Prior pitched the whole game and also gave up only two hits and two runs while fanning seven. In game two, Carlos Zambrano was in for 5.2 innings giving up three runs on eleven hits. After he left reliever Dave Veres gave up two more which gave the Braves the win.

In last night's game Matt Clement got in trouble early, which set the trend for the rest of the game. After 4.2 innings Clement had given up four runs off of four hits. When your starter comes out in the fourth, it's a long day for the bullpen that gave up two more runs and again put the game out of reach for the Cubbies.

The only bright spot for the Cubs last night was first basemen Eric Karros who hit two homeruns and was the main factor that kept the Cubs even close in the 6-4 loss. Karros hit his second homerun after what the writer at cubs.com called "a freak collision" with Andrew Fick as the Brave was attempting to make it first before Karros caught the relay throw.

Watching the incident, it was no "freak collision"; it was a flagrant hit. Karros reached out for the ball and caught it a full step before Fick reached the bag. As he crossed first, Fick reached his arm out and slammed Karros' to try and knock the ball loose, which he did but the umpire had already called Fick out. The play ended with a sprained forearm muscle for Karros who fell to the ground in pain. If you ever happen to see a replay of it you'll see how brutal it was. If something like that had happened in basketball it would have been a flagrant foul. But nothing was ever called on Fick.

Perhaps anger over the incident will be another motivator in tonight's game. I have a great feeling about it because Wood will be on the mound and he has been nothing short of spectacular this season.

Tonight's game in Atlanta is do or die as the best of five series is tied at two all.

You'll hear from me on this again tonight when the game is over.

"Peace Process" My Ass

18 Die in Israel Suicide Blast

JERUSALEM - A Palestinian suicide bomber blew himself up in a crowded beach restaurant in the Israeli port city of Haifa on Saturday. A television report said 18 people were killed. The attack came on the Sabbath before the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, or Day of Atonement. It was the first suicide bombing in a month and the first since a threat by Israel to expel Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.

But, of course, Hamas is not a known terrorist group to the French.

Expel Araft. And I mean expel him from his mortal coil. Dismantle Hamas and Islamic Jihad. And I mean dismantle by killing every single fucking rat in those organizations that support the killing of innocent people.

The Israelis want peace. We want peace. And I'm sure the every day Palestinians want peace. But these extremeists have got to be stopped in the only effective way known.

Kill 'em.

Kill 'em all.

UPDATE: Pali response:

Chief Palestinian negotiator, Saeb Erekat, said he appealed to international mediators to ensure that Israel does not retaliate. "We don't want Israel to add fuel to the fire," he said.

Don't add fuel to the fire?? What the fuck? How about if you not blow up little children and women you asshatted fucknozzle!!

UPDATE II: Make that number 20 dead now.

Media Slut

I wonder what it feels like to be a douche bag.

I guess if I really wanted to know, I could ask this piece of duck-butter known as George Butler. Butler is the documentary filmmaker who did "Pumping Iron" with Arnold in the 70's and the asswit who prepared Arnold's book proposal in 1997.

This week, Butler created a media firestorm by releasing this supposed quote from an interview Butler did with Arnold in the 70's:

"I admired Hitler, for instance, because he came from being a little man with almost no formal education, up to power. I admire him for being such a good public speaker and for what he did with it?(it would be nice to be) like Hitler in the Nuremberg stadium and have all those people scream at you and just being total agreement whatever you say."

Wow. Pretty damning, huh? I suppose I hate Arnold now because he's a racist fuck and - oh, wait a minute. What's this? Oh, here we go! Here's what Arnold actually said in the interview:

"In many ways I admired people ? It depends for what. I admired Hitler for instance because he came from being a little man with almost no formal education, up to power. And I admire him for being such a good public speaker and for his way of getting to the people and so on. But I didn't admire him for what he did with it. It is very hard to say who I admired and who are my heroes. And I admired basically people who are powerful people, like Kennedy. Who people listen to and just wait until he comes out with telling them what to do. People like that I admire a lot."

Emphasis mine, cheese-mo.

Damn. That's a pretty bad misquote by Mr. Butler (as-yet-to-be-beaten-with-his-own-ripped-off-appendage).

Well, George, what do you have to say for yourself?

"I am amazed that something like that escaped me."

So is every living organism with half a fucking brain!

Of course, every facet known as "news" in the media was drooling over the original quote and were more than happy to run it to the press before anyone looked into it.

Liberal Dimwit: "There's no media bias! You lying liar who tells lies 'cause you lie! Fucker!"

Right. Piss up a rope and call your mother and apologize for growing into a sub-human piece of trash.

Cubbies take a 2-1 lead

Wow. All I can say is wow.

Last night the Cubs twenty-three year old pitcher went out to the mound at Wrigley and threw a full game and only gave up 2 hits against the Atlanta Braves in game three of the Division Series.

Prior left seven batters swinging at nothing and completely shut down the hottest batting line up in the Majors as the Cubs took a 2-1 lead in the series.

Cub pitcher Damian Miller said Prior is "a freak. You're not supposed to do that when you're 23."

This afternoon at 3pm CT, the Cubs have a chance to end the best of five series as Cub Matt Clement takes to the mound to try and out duel Brave Ortiz at Wrigley.

To sum this article up in word would be to scream "Ouch!" at the top of your lungs.

Man Dies After Wife Crushes Testicles

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - An enraged Ethiopian mother of five will be tried for the murder of her husband who died after she crushed his testicles in a fight, police told the state-run Ethiopian News Agency.

Police said on Friday the man was so embarrassed after the incident that he declined to seek treatment for the injury, and died days later.

I understand being embarrassed and all, but come on! Those are you're fucking nuts!! Life ends if they die whether you do or not. Get me to a hospital as fast as humanly possible!

"Following a disagreement over the husband's spending habits, his wife refused to give him his dinner and also decided to sleep alone," police in the western region of Wellega said.

Damn dude. You really shouldn't have gone to that strip club and spent all that money. I know, I know, your wife has packed on some weight lately. But come on, you're in Ethiopia! So it could not have been more than like three ounces worth of spare tire.

"The husband was so angered by this affront by his wife that he tried to beat her."

Whoa. This changes everything. You had it coming, pal.

"In the melee that followed, the wife grabbed and twisted his testicles causing serious damage."

I'll say. The fucker died from massive nut trauma. If she gets off, which I think she should since it is self-defense, she'll get all his rice rations.

She's better off without him anyway.

Offing that crazy imbecility
gets you into the big facility

Bastards don't use their heads
need to realize we can't make amends
Need to take them down
'cause what goes around comes around

Need to get some flies on their eyeballs
and show the world these big brass balls
weakness is an invitation
that'll spur their motivation

Can't stop 'till they're all gone
Fight 'em tooth and nail, dusk 'till dawn
Fight on and bring it
let 'em know they're knee deep in it

Before I write too much I want my readers to know that for as long as the Chicago Cubs are in the post season that will be my main blogging topic. I've been a Cubs fan my whole life and them winning the division and being in the playoffs is a such a thrill for me that I can think of much else when it comes to free time. The Cubs are not the only thing I'm going to blog about, but it will be the focus here for a little while.

Anyways, on to tonight's 5-3 loss to the Atlanta Braves. Granted the Braves are a tough team, but I'm pretty well convinced the Cubs lost this game more so than the Braves went out and won it. From he get go the Cubs made some terrible base running decisions that cost them some outs they couldn't afford when you're playing a game with as tight a score as this one.

Carlos Zambrano, the starting pitcher for the Cubs tonight, is young and can go hot or cold without a moment's notice. More often than not he's on, but tonight he wasn't bad, just a little off, which gave the Braves just enough room to pull slightly ahead.

Despite what the Cubs were doing wrong, it almost looked as though fate would move their way as they remained tied three all in the top of the eighth and had the possibility of pulling it off regardless.

But then Dave Veres gave up a two run double in the bottom of the eighth and after Smoltz cleaned up the Cubs in the ninth it was all over with a score of 3-5.

Tomorrow is a travel day as both teams head to Chicago for game three of the best of five series at Wrigley on Friday. The Cubs young hot shot Mark Prior will get the start vs. Atlanta's Greg Maddox who get his MLB start in Chicago several years ago.

The series is now tied 1-1- and the Cubs can either come out and win it in Chi-Town, split the games and head back to Atlanta, or blow it all.

Time will tell.

I sat around for awhile trying to come up with a clever name for this post, which, by the way, is about last night's game one of the Cubs vs. Braves divisional series. The simple fact of the matter is that there isn't really a clever title you can come up with when using the last name "Wood." So I guess I'll just move along without a clever title.

Last night in Atlanta Kerry Wood put on a pitching clinic for the acclaimed Braves' lineup. Through 7 1/3 innings, Wood gave up only two hits, one run, and fanned eleven batters into submission. On top of this, Wood even hit a two run RBI straight up the gap to break up the 1-1 tie in the sixth inning. Wood then went on to score a run after Kenny Lofton's single brought him in.

Kerry Wood has always been a good fit for Chicago. He is a man with class, but with a blue collar work ethic and no desire for showmanship other than winning. He is focused, intelligent, and extremely talented. He can easily fit n along side some of the other Chicago greats; Walter Payton, Ernie Banks, Mike Singeltary, Michael Jordan.

What is even better about Wood is what is also the greatest thing about the entire Cubs pitching staff; they're young.

Wood just turned twenty-six and looks as though he has a long career ahead of him at Wrigley.

The Cubs other hot shot, Mark Prior, just turned twenty-three and another promising young pitcher, Carlos Zambrano (who gets the start for the Cubs tonight) is only twenty-two.

I love our pitching staff. They are hard working and don't walk around bragging and wearing gold chains and million dollar endorsements. They're young, they're tough, and they're here to win.
